Interesting info on transfer cases
Ever wonder what those numbers we call our transfer cases mean? Read on and find out. (re-posted from www.bigrubbers4x4.org)
Well I was spending some time under the liberty today changing fluids. I checked the ID tag on my transfer case and was surpised to see it was a NV 241 J (real close to the ruibcon numbers). After as little research I found what the numbers mean.
the first number-2 is how many gear ratios it has. In this case 1:1 high range and 2.72:1 low range
The second number -4 is a strengh index 1-7. Means it's a little more stout then a 231.
The third number-1 is type of case. 1 is part time, 2 is full time
with open diff and lockable part time option (a 242 for example.
Thought it was interesting. Here is the link with what all the numbers mean http://moose.ca/node/46
