Default erractic cruise control

Hey everyone,

I am hoping that someone can help me pinpoint a problem. Recently my cruise control has really been acting up. For a while it didnt work at all now, its working from 35 - 60 mph. Anything over 60 and the throttle will be floored one moment, then completely let off and then some quick bursts of throttle in between. Can anybody help me? Thanks!

I don't know hardly anything about cruise control, but have you checked the vaccum lines for it yet?

Also, sorry to hijack your thread, but I have a question of my own to add to his... My cruise control stopped working after the tranmission swap, does anyone have any answers as to why?

Lol, I came up with a solution to my own question (posting it made me give it some serious thought). When I permanently grounded the park/neutral wire to allow my truck to crank up, it won't activate cruise control because it thinks its in park or neutral!

As for your question... this is copied out of the 1995 factory service manual (you may want to download the entire manual and read the 10 page section on the cruise control)...

SPEED CONTROL SERVO
The speed control servo is mounted to a bracket on
the passenger side dash panel in the engine compartment.
The servo unit consists of a solenoid valve
body, a vacuum servo and the mounting bracket. The
PCM controls the solenoid valve body. The solenoid
valve body controls the application and release of
vacuum to the diaphragm of the vacuum servo. The
servo unit cannot be repaired and is serviced only as
a complete assembly

Vacuum will be your culprit. This was the problem I had when I first joined this forum.

+1 on checking vacuum lines.

Also run the diagnostic codes. Ignition on, off, on, off, then leave on, do this within 5 seconds and then record how the check engine light blinks. On my Dakota the speed sensor had failed making the cruise control work erratically. It pulled a code for this.
