Default NV3500 2WD trans to 4WD?

In terms of using a 2WD trans on a 4WD, is it possible? Will the existing transfer case (the NP231) on a V6 AX15 trans swap over to the NV3500? And if it will, will it handle the torque? From reading, it seems like this was the only transfer case used from 1988 to 1996, which means it would fall right into the time frame when the V8 was first offered with a manual transmission. SO, I assume there is a way to make it work.

I have also read that the shifter on a 96 and later NV3500 was angled more straight up and positioned 3" further towards the back in comparison with the pre-96 NV3500. Don't know, or think this will make a difference because it sounds like it will still come into the cab at the same spot.

I figure this was a good question to ask in the forum as other people might like to have the info.

You can't use a 2wd tranny, cause they don't have anywhere to bolt up the transfer case. The only way you could make it work is if you find a good 2wd tranny and a bad 4x4 tranny for cheap and are willing to swap the good parts over to the 4x4 casing.
