Default 1996 dakota AX-15 tranny

My tranny has just started to make this loud whining noise from 1st to 3rd; not so bad from 4th to 5th but it whines in 5th;also as you shift; and it gets louder as my speed increases. steadies out at about 65mph could this be a fluid or mechanical issue. any ideas? appreciate all suggestions. I am able to DIY.

So just to make sure I'm understanding this straight, is it making the noise while shifting or is it making the noise while in gear?

My first guess is a bearing is going out, but the question is which one.

The rear seal likes to fail in these trans .The front bearing is the first to worn you of a problem. I got my truck cheap because the trans failed . The second one had been rebuilt for the same reason ,but it was a little noisy .It lasted 9 years behind the magnum I put in the truck . The seal failed and trashed the front bearing .

Well that eliminates the pilot and throwout bearings as the potential problem. It still sounds like a bearing going out.

This could potentially be very dangerous, so only do it if you feel comfortable, but if it were mine, I would jack up the rear axle and put it on as many jackstands as you own. Then put blocks both in front of and behind the front wheels making sure they are very secure, start the truck, put it in gear and let it idle in gear and crawl under it and listen. Like I said, its not safe or smart (but if the truck were to fall, it should stall before it rolls over you), but it will give you a better idea of where the noise is coming from.

Is your truck 2wd or 4x4?

You can accomplish more or less the same thing if it's a 4x4 with the t-case in neutral. Sounds like a bearing on the countershaft.
