okay i've been restoring an 89 dakota 4X4 3.9L V6. As of the last couple of months 2 problems have popped up; first it takes a little longer than normal to start when it has been sitting a while but i'm not really all that worried about it as of right now(I figure it's just the new gas mixture that's used these days, carburators don't seem to like it), what does have me worried is that when it has been driven for a while and you cut off the engine you have to open the hood and let it cool off before it'll start back up. I'm worried that the water pump is starting to go bad and that the motor is getting too hot. Any ideas?(I know it's not the radiator, i just replaced it)
Ya if it is overheating, check the coolant level. You may have a leak. Even if you can't see it. I would say replace thermostat first before you tear into the water pump.
