fan clutch - electric fan
Does anybody have a recommendation on an electric fan? I believe the fan clutch is going out on my truck and would like to look at all options for replacement. Especially if they will get me more HP and better mileage.
Im just wondering but how does the fan clutch go bad and how do you know? overheating as in the clutch isnt grabbing and the fan slips or the clutch never lets go of the fan and it then runs as fast as the engine the whole time?
How does anything go bad? With lots of use or misuse.
I suspect its going out because the truck isnt cooling as it should and when it does start to over heat the truck sounds like a semi in low gear pulling a load. I am going to do further testing this weekend.
I just want to know what options I have should this turn into what I think it will. Mainly, if I do want to go with an electric fan I want to know how much time it will take to order, how much it will cost and the ease of modification.

I am not sure. Thats an interesting idea though. If it wouldnt be sucking on my HP the whole time I would be more proactive about investigating it.
From what it looks like I can get an electric fan for the same price as a new clutch but it looks as though I would also need to purchase a wiring harness that would almost double the price.
Anyone here already put an electic fan on their truck??

There are a few of us who has put them on. Here is a quick write up I have in the FAQ2.
Electric Fans
There is not a direct bolt in kit. The best choices are to Get a dual fan unit from a Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique. or the dual fan from a 98-03 Intrepid. I think you can also use a dual fan unit out of an early/mid 90s Camaro. You may need to make custom mounts. You can also go to most parts stores or www.summitracing.com and buy universal fans, check www.ebay.com too.
