Default Rear axle?!?!?!

I noticed on the rear axle of my truck that there is a little gaurded piece sitting dead center of my trucks rear axle.i was always woundering what it is.I had figured it out in the winter when i was messing around in 3 feet of snow down a very narrow road.my stupidity one side was a good drop to a lake the othere was a pritty close to strait up bank and at the end of this 20 foot lng road was a 90 degree right turn with a nice pitch towards the lake. well after trying to get around it in 4 high my back tires werent locking up like i thought they were suppose to.one tire would break loose and just spin.but when i put it in 4 low it locked both the tires up solid and away i went.

my question is..is there anyway to put this.what ibelieve is a vaccum locker. on a toggle switch or some type of switch so i could run it i 2 wheel drive.?

Unless its aftermarket you dont have any sort of air locker in the rear. You may have a limited slip differential. I doubt putting the truck in 4 low had any effect on your tire other than the gained traction allowed you to move without your tire spinning. IE you were getting enough traction to move instead of letting the power go to the tire that had the least traction.

You can install an ARB locker that will be on a switch that you can lock any time you want.

i would definatly agree.and mybe that is the case.but i dont think so in this instence it liturally locks the back axle solid when you turn the out side tire cherps/hopes around yhe corner...its unlocked in 4 high and 2wd and wount do it around the same corner unless you stomp on the gas i guess.

possibly iam wrong the its just the 4x4 i have had do that to me.

I have no clue what you are talking about! A pic would be good.

No stock dakota has a locker, like said above. There is no logical way to rig up a aftermarket selectable locker to our transfer case just for 4low.

That is the typical action with 4wd. The tires are all trying to go a different speed and the 4low increases engine torque considerably, So it is easier for one to slip. You have nothing to worry about.

oh i wasnt woried just curios as to y my dakota was doing it yet none of the othier 4x4 trucks i have been in will do it.and the piece im talking about is the only difference i have noticed.

okay if you are to look under your truck at the rear axle its on top towards the front ofthe truck and is directly in line with the drive shaft it has a couple houses going to it that look like vacuum hoses.and has a small plate protecting it.if that helps any.

Oh okay. That is the ABS sensor. It detects if the rear brakes are locking up during a hard stop, so it can activate the ABS to keep you from fishtailing down the road. It is wires not vacuum hoses.
