88 dakota 2wd transplant v6 to v8
My truck needs more power, the 3.9 it’s just not doing it for me...
Truck has a 3.9 v6 auto trans 2wd
I’d like to install a mild 318 or 360 sbm LA carbed engine
The 3.9 its a tbi, I’m going with a carbed setup
I have been doing tons of reading but most of the swaps are on newer Dakotas with magnum motors. I have some questions
I have a long block 318 that i can use but i could go to a junk yard and find a 360
1. Will a premagnum sbm LA 318 or 360 have issues with the motor mounts or will it bolt on the same motor mounts as the 3.9
2. Will a oil pan from a 82 ram d150 fit the Dakota
3. What kind of flywheel does a 360 need it not being internally balanced?
4. Do I need a different torque converter with either the 318 or the 360?
5. What kind of electric fan and controller do I need that won’t cost an arm and a leg
6. How do I lower the psi on the stock fuel pump to feed the carb
I’m not a noob, I’m a full time mechanic, I just have never done swaps like this, please help me so I can get the Dakota smoking some tires

Looks like we're on the same road. Got a post here "Shelby Elec. Fans". Haven't started on my swap yet, just got a pre Mag 360. From what I've been told it's much easier to use factory parts to do this swap, including the late V-8 core support and sheetmetal. But I'm hard headed so I'm going with what I have.
Was looking at 5.2 Mag in a '92 compared to pics of Shelby trucks, and the Shelby sets as far back as possible, with the dist. really close to the firewall. The Mag has a couple inches gap. I'm gonna shove mine as far back as I can, which will cause some fab work on the mounts, and probably a rework of the crossmember, shift linkage, driveshaft etc.
Since I have 'em I'm gonna use a Magnum accessory drive [serpentine belt] since it's a little shorter at the water pump and bottom pulley. Shelby mounted the fans in front of the A/C condenser, but I've found no pics of the setup, so I can't answer that yet.
The little A-500 OD trans is marginal at best behind a 318, PITA waiting to happen behind a 360. It'll bolt up to a 318 with no changes, a 360 needs a balance weight welded on the converter in the appropriate spot. Don't know yet on the pan either, my motor's coming out of an '82 D-350 which uses the same pickup pan, but I'd say it should work.
Get a return type regulator for the carb. I'm going with a computer/dist swap, homebrewed adapter and a 360 throttle body to keep the TBI. Well off to work.
