If it doesn't 'click' on, it is more than likely the compressor.

How do you know it doesn't need to be recharged? If you can locate the low pressure switch you can jump a wire across it and the compressor clutch should engage. If it does and you get cold air then you either need more freon or a new switch. If it doesn't then it could be really low on freon. I'm not the most knowledgeable on a/c but usually systems are just low.

The best way to check if it needs to recharged is take it to a shop. Even brakemasters or most jiffy lubes will check it.

Also make sure your compresser is actually running, Hopefully i dont hijack your thread but,
I also found out a while back my A/C actually still cools as long as its ran for around 2-5 minutes and is like in the high 70s or above but only cools like 5 degrees and i cant refill it but when i do turn it on i sometimes hear a hiss inside the cab, is it leaking through the ventalation system or do they normaly do that when you first turn it on?

Not sure on the 88 but on the 92-up it is on the firewall, passenger side. Just follow the hoses. You can check the FAQ for the service manual to see for sure
