I am 16 and just bought a 1995 Dakota Club Cab 3.9 V6 Automatic. I bought R/T rims (17"x9") for it for $200 with tires and put them on and they hit the control arms when I turn. Should or will 1/4" spacers take care of my problem? thanks

Edit: The rims themselves hit the control arms. I didnt notice this until I drove it so when I would turn, the rims would hit the control arms which grounded some metal off the rims but not much.

 

Ya spacers should help. Check www.ebay.com for them.

 

I think Bad96_3.9 had this problem when he put on his r/t rims. If I remember right, he ground down the control arm to clearance it. Spacers should work too, but just remember you'll need enough threads left on the lugs for the lug nuts to safely thread on to.

 

My lugs wont be long enough if I get 1/4" spacers? Also, wont grinding the control arm weaken it?

 

I'm not saying they won't be. I was just saying make sure they will be. That is a commonly overlooked problem with putting on spacers.

Yes, griding off part of the control arm could weaken it, but you'd have to slam it into a curb at a high rate of speed to do any damage. Think about it... if a 1/4" spacer will fix your problem, then how much of the control arm really needs to be ground down?

 

new spacers come with there own studs. The bolt on to the stock studs, then have there own studs in the spacer block

 

Only spacers that are and inch or bigger. The smaller spacers don't.

 

I grounded my control arms down alil and my rims dont rub when I am driving forward even with the wheel turned as far as it will go but for some reason, my rims rub when I drive backwards. Can somebody explain why this could be? I am gonna take my wheels back off tomorrow and see if I can tell.

 

i only had to grind maybe 1/8 or so off my control arm. that little bit from the top will not mess with the strenth, if it hits somthing hard enough to tell it will be FUBR anyways. mine did the same thing. too. i just sprayed a little black paint on there and ground it a litttl bit at a time until the wheel did not rub it off. and mine still hit a little after it was done on a turn and big bump so i just let them clearence themselves! lol

 

I got my rims on the front but I have to buy a new tire before I can put my others on the rear. I plan on lowering my truck 2" in the front with drop spindles and 3" in the rear with blocks. Hopefully I wont run into any other control arm clearance problems!
