Talking Need help with 96 dakota stuck in 4W drive

My son has a 96 Dakota 4 wheel drive, when in 2 wheel drive the wheels lock and drag. When in 4 wheel Hi the truck can drive but hums and wheels seem to drag. We can not even put truck in 4LO, the floor selector won't shift to it. We just had the trans re-built and then about a month later this happens. I'm not really much of a mechanic so any advice I would appreciate it.

Based on what you said, I think the only fix is to rebuild your transfer case or get a new one.

To me it sounds like the transfer case shifter adjustent is off. Go underneth and look for the shifter. Follow that untill you find a square piece with a 1\2 in bolt in the middle of it. You need to adjust that. If you need help check the FAQ in this section for the service manual.
