I recently bought a 1991 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 5speed and i found out that it doesn't shift into 5th gear or reverse. Now i think that it might be the shift linkage but im not for sure...so if anyone can help me out that would be greatly appriciated.
When you say it doesn't shift into 5th, does it not move into the spot or it just grinds? Give more details. Is the shifter stiff? Does it grind in any gears?
If the shifter won't go into the 5th or reverse positions, I would say either the linkage rods or the forks are damaged. If the shifter moves but the transmission won't go into gear, I would say the collar is damaged. If it goes in but grinds, I would say the sycnronizer is worn out.
Was the transmission rebuilt before you bought it? It could be there is an issue with the reverse lock out. I've seen that installed upside down and not allow 5th to engage.
