Ok. Time for the tear down. Who wants pictures? What a stupid question right? Here ya go. Feel free to comment on good bad or ugly, as this is my first real motor tear down and "rebuild". That and the 2 I helped with were 351s.

Wow, that plenum gasket wasn't blown out at all! :P

The top of the engine looks clean though... no sludge buildup. Thats a good sign. Means it must have been fairly well taken care of.

Lol. Actually the gasket was intact. Or at least, it wasnt bowing out of the sides like the ones in the pictures I looked at on here.

Yup not bad. Ill let people have a guess at the mileage before I spoil the fun. Theres a little crap in there, but not as much as I expected to see. Gonna pull the heads tomorrow and look at more fun stuff.

Cool! Don't forget to do the Kegger mod on it. Just cut out all the guts! Also the oil residue can be from a bad PCV or a breather filter too, not just a plenum gasket.

Yeah, +1 to the kegger mod. It really opened up my engine from about 2800-5200 rpm. You might need headers and a bigger throttle body (or ported out stock throttle body) to really notice it though.

Also, if you do the keggar mod and somehow mess it up, I have an extra intake manifold I can send you!

This is how far I cut the runners down...

Yup. Kegger mod begins tomorrow.

So I went ahead and pulled the heads(holly crap are those bolts in there), and was wonderfully suprised. All the cylinders are mirror finish with no visible wear/marks/grooves. Of course Ill need to mic em out to make sure, but they look good. I cleaned off a couple pistons and they dont seem to have any pitting, just a lot of carbon buildup. I was told cylinder 6 was "bad", but the guy I bought it from never ran the motor. He said he bought the truck and threw in a junkyard 360. Upon inspection cylinder 6 was "bad" because someone misthreaded the spark plug. Easy fix, especially with the head off. Heres the pics.

Just for fun. Whoever guesses closest to the mileage on the motor when pulled will get a bag of my homemade deer jerky. Beats the hell out of store bought any day.

Its good stuff. I have my own electric grinder and dehydrator and Ive spent the last 5 years and over 150 pounds of jerky making it good. I butcher all my own meat, and it comes out 100 times better than the crap you pay tons of money for from a processing plant.

Hey crazy, how much "seat of your pants" hp did you gain with the swap? I did a google search(actually several) and couldnt find any good reliable hp/tq numbers for the 318 vs 360.

For me it was the torque that blew my mind! For example my truck will slam you back into your seat, and I mean Hard! You can feel that torque! The HP of coarse did increase, it was most noticeable at higher RPMs, it just flies.

The numbers are

5.2L MPFI 230HP 290TQ 1992-1993
5.2L MPFI 220HP 280TQ 1994-1996
In 1994, the 3.9L and 5.2L got a slight reduction in power because the exhaust manifolds and exhaust tubing was reduced in size.

5.9L MPFI 245HP 330TQ

Remember that is at engine.

Also on the intake and heads do some porting. Put the intake manifold/ exhaust gaskets up and grind out the excess material.
