I'd throw it in an see how it does..

I hate ignorant mechanics, I see the wrong fluid in manual trannys all the time, manual doesn't automatically=gear oil!!!
I hear that! I tried to PM you about it but it said your PM count is full. I was wondering what the symptoms were of your nv3500 when it died due to gear oil being used. And what are your thoughts about it living if I just flush it out and put in syncromesh?... cause keep in mind that I won't have anything to put it in for a long time to test it out and 30 days to return it.

I've been doing a lot of research for transmission fluids for the nv3500, cause I refuse to believe that the Mopar MTF for the NV3500 is the only thing out there cause it cost a fortune!! Anyway, I found this...

http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=45&pcid=7

And I think I'm going to give it a try. It got great "reviews" from other forums that I read where people were using it in the nv3500, and it costs a LOT less than the mopar stuff.

Also, it appears that the reason gear oil is bad for the nv3500 is because the typical GL-5 gear oil contains sulfur which will eat up the brass syncros.

So anyway, what I'm thinking is as long as the syncros aren't dead in this transmission, I'll change the oil a few times in a several hundered mile period to flush it out and run it 'til it dies!

In the meantime, I'm going to try that stuff in my 4x4 cause the transmission has gotten NOISY since the weather has gotten cold, and I read that that redline MTL will quiet it down!

My nissan truck calls for 10w-40 motor oil in the manual tranny.

I think that's Hahns5.2's point! Certain manual transmissions require specific fluids and some mechanics out there will just dump in GL-5 gear oil without a second thought... and GL-5 has sulfur in it that will eat up brass syncros in transmissions that have brass syncros.

And FWIW, 10w-40 motor oil is about the same viscosity as 75w-90 gear oil, but without the same additives as the gear oil.... like sulfur. But, 10w-40 is too thick for the nv3500, which requires a fluid with a motor oil viscosity around 5w-30.

Sorry I forgot to empty my PMs.

Mine made noise in all gears but 4th, 5th was loudest so that leads me to believe it was toast countershaft bearings. The sycnrhos seemed to be fine in it.

I tried Redline MTL in mine for a few months, I just replaced it with Pennzoil Synchromesh because it shifts better. Didn't really notice any difference in noise.

FWIW I see the Pennzoil stuff in every autoparts store for $5/qt, the MTL was $10/qt.

Hmmmm... well I already ordered the Red Line MTL for my 4x4, cause I didn't want to wait, but I'll give the pennzoil stuff a try to flush out the 2wd tranny since it's so cheap!

My NV4500 had redline in it when I got it. Actually still has the redline in it. I am changing to Castrol Syntorque only because it is the recommended fluid for it, but a lot of good things have been said of redline.
