Default i might be crazy (billy joel)

i thought that most tranny's where interchangeable between 2x4 and 4x4. the only difference was that they took the rear extension housing off and inserted a transfer case, few lines between the two and a shorter driveshaft. i know that different years make a difference but similar years should work? (don't trash me to bad on this one crazy)

You missed the part about changing the output shaft. And it has to be the same engine. But as fas as I know that is all that is needed. Yes years do matter. 92-95 transmissions are the same and 96-00 are the same.

your saying that as long as the years are similar and you match up the splines on the output shaft your set. not positive but i think the 87-91 3.9 are the same as the 92-96 3.9 the only difference is that on 92-96 has a cable from the throttlebody and the 87-91 has a rod. the next question is can a tranny from a 92-96 318 magmun be dropped into a 87-91 3.9. my guess is that it will bolt up but the electronics won't match up. in other words trying to put a heavier duty tranny in a 87-91 3.9 ain't gonna work!
