Default a/c heather blower motor not working

My 1995 Dodge Dakota Sport's blower motor stopped working. For a while all I had was hi speed. After awhile it all quit and I could smell melted plastic. The connector to the resistor was burnt and the resistor itself didn’t look too good. I replaced the resistor and cut out the connector and attached single connectors to each of the wires. I hooked them back up where they belong. I still have no fan. If I run a test light to the plug where the fan connects, I have power. If I hook the fan directly to my battery it runs. When turning it by hand it feels a little tighter then I think it should. (would like to test the amp draw on the motor but don’t know how much it should draw and not sure if I just connect my meter in series with it, don’t want to fry my meter) Before it all went out, I could play with my control switch and make it work in all speeds with a little effort and before I pulled it all apart, I could play with the switch and there was one little sweet spot between the highest setting and the next one down where it would try to turn on but that was all. I don’t know if my control unit ( the piece in the dash) is bad, the motor, or something to do with the new resistor of the fact that I tossed the connector and hooked all the wires up straight to it. I probed the wiring harness coming to the control unit in the dash and have no power there. I’m lost, any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like it might be the switch. But double check every wire for correct power. Check the FAQ in this section for the wiring diagram.

I hooked up my meter and the fan is pulling 14 amps when i hook it directly to the battery, I found some info that said 13 amps is ok 20 is bad.. I cant find a spec on the motor draw. My local junk yard has the control unit so I am going to try that. Thanks for your response BTW - i discovered that in dash control unit has to be connected to the harness to show power, just probing the end of the harness gets you nothing
