Fuel pump access
Okay. The Dakota is back on the road, running well and I have a fuel gauge that works. Total cost/damage: $81 tools, $180 pump/clamps/hoses/fuel line clips = $261, plus roughly seven hours of my time...mostly due to rusty bed bolts. Was able to re-use four of my six after an hour or so in the shop cleaning them up with PB Blaster and running a nut up and down until they were smooth. Also got the fuel filter changed. Took about four hours to change the pump and filter, and the rest taking the bed loose and securing it again. Next time I will remove all the bolts, unplug the tail and license plate lights, remove the spare tire crank tube, and run some wire through the rear-most frame/bed holes after all the bolts are out...then tie the wire(s) loosely...to help keep the bed from sliding around while it's being lifted and lowered. I was able to push the bed around okay alone, but I'm 6'3" and 265...smaller folks should consider a helper. Funny thing is, my Dodge/Chrysler dealers/stealers couldn't source the bed bolts or the ones I need for the front skid plate...couldn't even tell me a size. Sure miss the days when people worked in the parts shop and kept enough stock on hand to actually size a bolt by hand or with a chart/book. Had to go a local bolt/fastener specialty shop to get two more bed bolts and what I hope will fit the frame holes for the front skid plate. Putting the final fasteners in is tomorrow's job...already tired of the cold weather today.
