Default Gear display not aligned

My 1996 Dodge Dakota today quit showing the active gear correctly.
A week ago, it started getting stuck in park when it's cold, and now the gear display shows neutral when its in drive. Theres a thin cable/wire around the steering column, and its broken. Could this cause the tranny to stick in park.
How would I go about replacing it, I cant find anything in the fsm and I dont really know what its called. Thanks for the help.

Just try re-wraping/tying it with a thin wire or string or something. It will be trial and error on getting it just right though.

But if you want to try to buy the factory wire, the parts manual is available for download in FAQ2. It would probably be a long shot on whether or not its a discontinued part though.

The slider is adjustable. You do have to remove the dash panel cover. (Wood trim) Then remove the gauge cover. The slider can ratchet side to side.
