Default tranny fill

hey everyone

i've got a 1996 Dakota 4x4 3.9lt 5speed, and my transmission is being a pain. its leaking out of something. there's always transmission fluid dripping down the back of the oil pan. so gotta get that fixed, but in the mean time i need to put more tranny fluid in it. i looked it over the best i could in the snow, but i can't find the filler plug. where is it located?

Welcome to DodgeForum!

For the leak, chances are its the input shaft seal. You have to pull the transmission to replace it.

The fill hole of the ax-15 is located about half way up the back of the driver's side of the gear case (the front half of the transmission). It will be right in front of the bolts that hold the case halves together.

If you need specific diagrams or troubleshooting info, you can download a free copy of the '96 FSM in faq2 at the top of our section.

**EDIT** And just an FYI, the ax-15 uses 75W-90 GL-5 Gear oil.

thanks man for letting me know. i'm gonna get that filled tonight. but i'd really hate to drop the transmission to replace that seal. you think some stop leak would fix it for temporary?
