Default rough idle, accelerating/decelerating on highway...

Hey guys,

I just bought this '90 dakota convertible a couple weeks ago, and starting to have some problems after only running 1 tank of gas through it. The seller told me to run fuel injector cleaner every couple tanks, so I'm guessing there has been a problem for a while, he has just tried to delay any major repairs.

When starting, sometimes it won't start the first time, but fires up the second try every time. It has a very rough idle now, feels like a cylinder or two aren't working...and that is about to die when idling, especially cold.

However, when accelerating it seems to do fine, maybe an occasional bog or stutter, but its the idle and cruising at a consistent speed where the problems occur.

Just made a 100 mile trip with it, and on the highway...when cruising around 65 mph, it seems like it would try to downshift, accelerate, then give up, and decelerate. then try the same thing again...and again...it would do it in spurts of 3 or more, until I completely let up off the gas,(let it sort of 'reset') and then I could accelerate again to get back up to 65mph.

Have any of you heard of a similar problem? I read the FAQ's, and see it could be the IAC (I took some pics so maybe someone could help me locate potential problem areas, I'm new to dakotas)

Is the IAC behind the distributer (circled blue)? or is it what I circled in purple?

Thanks for your help, Greg

Look inside the TB and you'll find a slot in there. Thats the IAC behind it.

I don't see it in your pics. The air cleaner is in the way.
Here is a pic we got in the FAQ. This is of a magnum engine. Yours will be in a similar place.

Throttle body ^ ^ ^ IAC? Guessing it's the red arrow? I took another pic but the camera didn't save it for some reason...what is the blue arrow pointing to?

Here are some good pics of the truck finally for those who saw the dark ones...

Thanks for the help guys

Should be that red arrow, but that engine bay sure looks a heck of a lot different than the magnums!!!

Good looking truck BTW!! I like it!
