Well first I wanted just to gut the cat, because it was rattling and is going to go bad.

Then people told me not only on this site but other places that an open chamber in an exhaust system is bad for exhaust flow.

So then somebody said that they just put a pipe through their cat and installed it into the exhaust system. Is this possible? I can't have anything on their that wouldn't pass a visual inspection, like a glasspack or a straight pipe to the muffler.

Would have to either get a high flow cat, or do the pipe through the cat idea. And I can buy a 20" pipe for like $20, so that would definately be cheaper.

You have find the diameter of the pipe on the ends of the cat. Its either I.D. or O.D. And find pipe that will fit snug inside the pipe. But if your state visually looks at your cat and sees a discrepancy. They may raise a stink about it. You can get replacement high flow cats from autozone for under $50.

But I will warn you that if your current cat is welded to the Y pipe and you cut it. You're gonna walk into problems putting it all back together because of that stupid bend in the pipe in front of the pipe. Take a look, you'lll see what I mean. And then your exhaust will leak after that which is annoying as hell.
