High Volume oil pump... ?
I am getting ready to do the oil pump & rear main on my '92 2wd V-6. they guy at Advance auto was extolling the virtue of the high volume oil pump. It sounds good in theory, but I have a stock 3.9L V-6. He said all I had to do was to add 25% more oil than normal, but I am thinking that I have seen larger than standard oil pans for this type of application.
Anything wrong with saving the $30 and getting the standard oil pump, or is there real value in a high volume, and what other mods would be necessary to go with it?
Thanks

I'm not aware of anything. The oil pump I put in my truck is labled high volume and I have no other modifications to the oiling system and I've never put more than the specified volume of oil in during oil changes either. Haven't had a problem in the year and a half its been in there. Keeps great oil pressure that never fluxuates!
Mopar tested their high volume oil pumps, if I remember correctly back in the day when they were making kit cars. They found with the stock oil pickup tube that the high volume oil pump didn't flow anymore than the standard volume oil pump.
The pickup tube is a limiting factor. So unless you upgrade your pickup tube the high volume pump isn't going to do you any good.

I am looking at the Melling pumps at Advance Auto, and both come with a new pickup, so I can only assume that the HV would have an appropriately sized pickup tube.
I am just wondering if there is any real benefit for the extra $30. Good to hear that I should not need a new oil pan or extra oil, and more volume from the pump sounds to me like a good idea. Keep lots of oil flowing to all corners of an older engine.

The only manufacturer that I am aware of that makes a larger than stock tube is Moroso. The Moroso tube is the same outside diameter as the stock tube but uses a thinner-wall tube to increase the inside diameter to flow more oil.
I don't see why more oil wouldn't hurt. Go for it if you want. If you do get it measure the inside diameter of the new tube and the stock tube. I am curious to see if the new one is larger.

Not sure if you want high volume or high pressure.
I did a high pressure oil pump swap on a 3406 cat engine last year. And drive pressure went from 60psi to almost 100psi drive pressure. The idea of it is to add more pressure to the piston and other moving parts by giving a better 'oil bearing' The way the kit works is it changes the fittings and changes out the spring to a stiffer one to give more compression.
Kinda the same idea how turbo's work. They work on an oil bearing to stay centered. And if the oil drops in the turbo. Destruction!!!
