eveyone probably knows what my dakota did ...well the jeep my father lent me while i rebuild my dodge did some thing almost the same it blew the oil filter and left a 6 mile on again off agan trail after the first 300 yards of strait oil slick as i got close to my gf's house i noticed a ticking and then a knocking as i pulled in her driveway

You're not using Fram oil filters are you? :P

 

Damn man that sucks, never seen that happen unless the filter was crap, wasn't tightened down enough, or the old seal was still on it, or is the threads that feed the filter on was shot.

 

my mechanic showed it to me and the filter seal had a factory defect and was spit and because it had full synthetic it saved the engine
and because he did the last oil change in it(cause my father doesnt want to void the warenty by having me or him do it) he towed it to his shop and put a new oil filter and a new oil change all on his dime

 

Seems your luck isn't so bad after all. My luck would have been a sized motor.
