Post 95 Dakota Engine Problems

I have a 95 Dakota (318 5.2 4WD) that has been making a valve clicking noise for year. I went to the dealership and they informed me that the engine shaft had about a 1/16" play in it and the engine needed to be replaced. I talked to friends and they didn't agree and I should contine to drive the truck. Recently the motor was making a sqealing noise so I replaced the water pump but the noise is still there. Went to a different mechanic and he verifed that the shaft was moving in and out and the engine and should be replaced. The truck has a 103k miles and no one I have talked with has seen this problem. The truck does not leak or use oil. My concern is that there may be a hidden problem that caused the engine problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Could be anything. It is best to stop driving it and rebuild or replace the motor. Yes you can still drive it but the more you drive it the more damage you do.
