Default Oil/Filter Recommendations?

Howdy Forum!

Looking to do an oil change on the truck and wanted some recommendations on what you think would be a good oil to use. I usually have used Fram filters but if you recommend something different i appreciate the info.

I have done a few oil changes in the past, but this will be the first on this vehicle so any tips that are specific to this vehicle are appreciated too :-D

Truck has 165K on it, 5.2L V8 Magnum

Thanks Forum!

I use Royal purple every now and then but at 8.99 a quart it gets pricy so i use 10w-30 mopar oil but the one thing i never go cheap on is the filter i always rock the K&N oil filter!

I use Castrol GTX High Milage 10w-30 and a Purolator PureOne oil filter. I used to use Fram until I realized what peices of junk they are.

tarrin8 -> this is just my opinion, but you spend WAY too much money on oil changes!! That k&n oil filter isn't doing any better than the ones half its price.

If you haven't been running synthetic I wouldn't switch to a full synthetic now.

I use standard Castrol GTX and I also like the Purolater oil filters. By all means get that Fram off there now! Horrible filters....

Lol. Thanks for the advice everyone. I didnt realize Fram filters were garbage. I don't know whats on the truck ATM but i'm sure it's nothing good :-o. It sounds like Purolater is the filter i should look for so I will probably pick one up tomorrow. I'm still trying to get the VSS done on the freekin Taurus and that has been a not so good experience. I want to finish one (far too drawn out and PITA) project before moving onto the next. I'll be updating my VSS post in the off topic section if anyone wants an update on that too btw.

Thanks everyone!

I used to use fram and like above mentioned they are junk. I use WIX filters and Castrol GTX oil or Valvoline oil every now and again.

In truth with 165k the oil that you use wont make any real power differences. if your looking for that try running a half to a whole quart short to cut down on windage ( not reccomended if you have oil leaks or if your burn oil) I usually buy one step up from the cheapest oil i can find. As a commonsence thing it should be obvious that what ever store brand oil there are selling chances are that they dont have there own refinery and are buying from a somewhat reputable source anyway. as for filters at the level of performance that these motors are capable of you shouldn't be worried about how many microns it will filter down to just read that as cloged up sooner and switched to bypass mode. Burst strength isn't really an issue either because chances are you'll never see the north side of 80psi of oil pressure. I have never personally had an issue with any oil filter i have used but if you choose to shy away from Fram so be it although I'm sure that if you did have an issue with one of their filters they would be more than happy to hear about it and fix the problem for you. remember its just an oil change as it shouldn't be as complicated as determining the airflow loss percentages in your cylinder head due to carbon build up.

i run what ever synthetic is on sale at the store with a filter. 1 time it was quakerstate full synthetic(10w-30 of course) with a Purolater pure one. the last one was castrol gtx full synthetic with a mobil1 filter. and with the discount i get from my bro, i'm only really paying $8 for an oil change.
