If you have a 7 1/4 diff it would be a good idea to move up to a 8 1/4.But on the other hand I thought I would get by with the parts I had, till there was time to change everything.Well 8 years later ,the 5 speed fail forcing me get around to it. But mine is 2 wheel drive, and I baby all my small blocks

The V8 models come with the heavier duty 518 tranny and the v6's usually come with the 500 tranny. If you seriously baby is it should be ok; however. depending on mileage, dodge transmissions are not the greatest. Im putting a 360 in my 92 v6 truck with a smaller 500 trans, but it was built to handle a 360. Use your own discression. I work for a salvage yard and I am constantly messing with this stuff, so if you have any more questions let me know.
