Default 4x4 problems/ issues

Hello, new to the forum and I just picked up a new 1991 Dak 4x4 with a 318 tbi auto trans and manual 4x4 engage. I have been using the faq and search but I still have a couple of questions about this truck.

I have been reading that binding in the 4x4 operation is normal on these trucks but here is my situation. On dirt (driveway) in drive moving slow I pull the 4x4 selector back to 4hi and it's like the brakes are on and the engine pitches forward enough for the fan to contact the fan shroud slightly. If I put it in reverse the motor settles back but when in drive it does the same thing again. Put it back in 2hi and move in reverse a few feet and all returns to normal. What could be going on here?

Thanks.

Binding in 4wd is normal when engaged in 4wd on a high traction surface like paved streets or even tight gravel and dirt roads.

Based on your description it sounds like your motor mounts are bad or loose. The engine/drive-train should all be held tight to not move around. Or even maybe the radiator or shroud loose or broken.

THanks for the info. I'll look into getting the motor mounts replaced. It was hard to tell but it looks like they may be splitting. I'll update this once I get that done.
