Default Cooling System Upgrade

For all you guys that are running electric fans, what has worked for you?
I've currently got a 1650cfm single puller. It does a good job maintaining temp. It just can't get ahead to shut off. I've got some shroud modifications to make later, that may help some. Just curious to see what you guys are using.

Thanks
Jeff

First of all am I reading your signiture right? You have a 5.7 Hemi in your 92 Dakota? If so that is so cool and you need to give up all the details. Or is it just a plan right now?

If I remember right I got a 14in and a 15in. The 15in pulls some serious CFM and Amps. I don't remember the correct numbers anymore. But according to the box the 15 is sufficient for small blocks alone. But I live in the desert with high temps so I need the most I can so I have the 14 for extra. And I stay nice and cool. As a side note I got 2 small 10in I think in front of the AC condenser to help only when I have on the AC.

By "can't get ahead" do you mean you can get it cooler then you want to shut it off for a bit while driving. Just remember your thermostat will not let the engine go below the set temperature no matter what. So if you want the engine lower get a Low thermostat. I use a 180 deg. Stock is 195. The 160 is to low.

You must have a good battery in there to survive all those fans, but I do think you would need them to keep it nice and cool.

Okay thanks for the input. What brand is your 15" fan? Mine is just a cheap-o piece that I bought online for $30. It was good enough for an experiment.

Yes, I do have a 5.7 in my truck now.

-2007 engine (drive by wire intact)
-used my 5.9 magnum motor mounts, bolted to an adapter plate that's bolted to the block with countersunk screws
-used my A500 trans, added manual valve body because of no kick down linkage (also had to add lock up and o.d. toggle switches)
-A500 was rebuilt by Phoenix Trans in Texas
-order a flywheel and spacer from xvmotorsports
-purchased a 2007 5.7 hemi ecm specifically for manual transmission (since my transmission is unable to communicate with the 5.7)
-B&G Chrysler flashed the ecm to be a stand alone unit
-found a guy on ebay that modified my original 5.7 harness
-used my 1992 computer and trimmed down harness to control everything but the engine (sounds crowded but it's actually not bad if you lay it out right)
-had to cut the cross member and cut a few inches from the front sump of the 5.7 truck oil pan. It was just enough to clear and not enough to make me alter the oil pickup

There are little things that I'm sure I'm leaving out
A lot of the street rodders are using complete engine/trans takeouts
Probably easier path to take. You may not have to jump through as many hoops.

I'll get some pictures of the engine bay

Sick! Were the motor mount adapters custom built or did you buy them somewhere? Yes take tons of pictures. Of every angle, some of the cross member and motor mounts too.

If possible can you do a detailed write on a new post up on the swap. From start to finish. Include pictures of the process if possible. Videos ect. We constantly get questions about that swap. All we got is a 2nd gen. I can post it up in the FAQ2 for others to see.

Well at least my engine is bigger than yours! But yours is way stronger and cooler. I got a mild built 5.9 Magnum. You'll kick my butt!

I am not sure what brand my fans are. I bought them off the shelf at Pepboys and Autozone years ago.

Yes actually I do. I have dual Optima Yellow top batteries. But the Alternator is the true one that powers the fans while driving. I have a 140 amp alternator or is it 120, very HD.

345HemiRT: Wow, quite a swap. It must have felt real good when you got that all together. A few years ago we replaced the 727 in our 76 Cordoba with a rebuilt 500 out of a 1990 Dak and the OD and lock up are controlled by switches. We replaced the 2.4 rearend with 3.55 Suregrip and it works fairly slick. But as you know . . . there was no computer work involved. Would you know how many horses the Hemi has over the 5.9 Magnum?

I'll have to admit that I'm not a picture taker. I was more focused on shoving the thing in there than documentation. Probably the wrong way to be...but I will get the front end up in the air and take some pics underneath. I can also clean up my grocery list of fabrications and parts.
The motor mounts are custom. I checked around and nobody is making them for dakotas. They do have mounts for the older fullsize trucks..

I honestly wasn't sure if Frankenstein would come alive. It did feel pretty awesome when it fired on the first turn.

The Hemi makes the truck feel very swift and agile on the highway. Much more than the 360 magnum that was in it. It launches very hard as well. The stock 5.7 is around 345hp, the stock 5.9 was around 235hp. I loved the 360 though, mine was modified with some Mopar / Hughes Performance goodies. It could really lay the wood. I just wanted more.
With the ECM flash, exhaust, air intake. I would say it should be around 380-390hp range.

The 5.7 L (345 cu in) Hemi in the Ram delivered 345 hp (257.3 kW) and 375 lb·ft (508 N·m), but 340 hp (253.5 kW) and 390 lb·ft (529 N·m) for the 300C and Magnum R/T, which is exactly 100 hp (74.6 kW) more than the old 5.9 engine.

5.9 Magnum 245HP and 330TQ

Edit: You beat me to it 345HemiRT

Crazy4x4RT: Sorry about that. You got the hp number right on the 5.9 at least. I was off by ten.

Holy &#$%! I was wondering for a while now if a Hemi swap would be possible. I would never try it, too much fabrication, but man you get MASSIVE props for pulling it off. Pics please!!!
