What radiator to put in the 5.2 transplant
5.9's didn't come in a Dakota 1st gen. So you would have to be talking about a Ram with a 5.9 and the Rams radiator are different.
I have a 5.9 running off a 5.2 radiator which is more then enough. If your not cooling properly you have a problem.
i put a 5.2 alum rad in my 89 3.9, it bolts right up. only problem i had was about a 4 inch (10 cm) lip that blocked part of the rad on the drivers side that had to be removed with a grinder and cutting disc. you will also have to get a plastic cowl to fit the new rad the factory 3.9 one fits but blocks part of it.
the rads i found where the same except for the extra 4 inches tacked on the drivers side and like crazy said the 5.2 rad should have plenty of cooling.
come to think of it i'm sure i used the plastic cowl off an 88 3.9 i had for parts. it had air conditioning and mine didn't. it looked like mine but had 4 extra inches on the drivers side and had swinging doors that closed when you stopped and gradually opened the faster you went. also now that i think of it i'm pretty sure the 88 had the same size rad as a 5.2, thats why i knew it would fit my 89.
i'm a bit slow after a summer of hiking through the woods but it's slowly coming back to me.
