tranny swap from 89 to 93
hello all
i love my dodge dakota truck and really want to keep it going
i have a 1989 dodge dakota v6 3.9 manual with 250,000 on the engine, i just swapped the engine out after the oil pump died and went with an engine from a pull apart that only had 100,000 on it. it was going strong till last week
then the leaks from the tranny started and before i knew it i was on a long haul from boston back home to kentucky when this whining and scream started and it all locked up (luckily just about 40 miles from my home). it starts and runs fine but won't go into gear at all. the stick goes into first but nothing "grabs" you know........so i went and purchased a transmission from a guy down the road, he has a 4 cyl. engine 5 speed transmission out of 93 dodge dakota only 120,000 miles, it was 50.00.
will these trade out or do i have a 50 dollar paper weight?
thanks guys for any help

The bad news is no it won't work. Been there tried that. I have an 88 4x4 and had a hell of a time finding a 5 speed tranny. I finally bought a 90 truck with a bad motor but a rebuilt transmission. What you want is an A535 five speed. The 88 has a different input and output shaft than the 93. Count the splines on each tranny. You definitely need an 87-91 5 speed. The 4wd A535 has a longer tailshaft yet so the transfer case won't bolt on to a 2wd tranny.
The good news is that you'll sell the one you bought in a heartbeat on ebay easily for $250 so just make sure you collect about $100 for shipping strapped on a pallet.
Can you tell I already went through this?
