Holley carb with overdrive tranny
The Holley site states not to use a 4v double pumper with an automatic overdrive transmission. Why or why not? My plan was to use a A518, but may have to swap unless someone can shed some light as to the reason behind the incompatability.
Well, to follow up on the why or why not. The A518 (rh) is a 4 speed, and was never offered with a 4 barrel carburetor. Holley "could not" comment for fear of customer retaliation, other than to say it shouldn't be done. Bouchillion Performance, and Lokar have very nice throttle cables/KD cables for the said swap and PATC has a very nice solenoid write up, for controlling the lockup and overdrive functions using tranny pressure (meaning no dash switches). The PATC lists the kit for around $85 (minus a few plumbing parts) at the time of this writing.
Mopar has a few KD linkages throughout the years for the 727, and they are compatible (coicedentally, so are the 904 linkages), as do newer dodge engines with the cable setup. The pressure arm has either a rod through, or a nipple attachment, both can be found either in a junkyard or from online retailers/ resellers. The rod "pushes" and the cable "pulls" so the cable straps on the transmission may be used for cable routing.
Be forwarned that the linkage rod setups differ between a 4 barrel arm and a 2 barrel arm (the flat stock with an elongated channel that attaches to the throttle arm). Allpar and Moparts both have a plethora of schematics for chrysler linkages.
I am using a high rise intake that will not allow the standard 360 throttle bracket to line up correctly (mount tabs bent to accomodate the magnum head), so I purchased a throttle bracket for the cable setups (about $13) and has to enlarge the square holes about 3/32" to fit the dakota throttle adapters. The bracket will fit both types of induction, but I am curious as to how it will last as it feels a little flimsy.
