Default Temp/ heater problem

Ok, my temp gauge quit working awhile back and I haven't had heat in the truck all winter so far. I was told to make sure the wire that goes to the thermostat is hooked up. I checked the wires around it and everything is hooked up. I then pushed down on all the connections and shook some wires. My temp gauge started working on the trip home from work(about 15 miles) then quit before I got home. So I'm thinking a wire is loose or something. Butidont know which wire i should be looking at. Any help with pics would be wonderful. Thanks guys and gals!!!

Sorry for the crappy drawing. The gauge operates on a single wire. The two wire sensor is for the computer (ECM). Hope this helps.
