Default 93 Dakota backfire intermittently

I have a 93 Dakota that will backfire and sputter upon acceleration, but it doesnt do it every time, but it does seem to be getting worse. Any ideas on what it could be? Please help me.

I have a 91' Dakota LE 4x4 w/ the 318 and what you are describing is exactly what has happened to my DAK. when it was about 3 or 4 years old. The truck had a clogged Catyletic converter. Once replaced, my backfires and sputtering went away! It's worth a look at least.
