Angry aftermarket speakers

just did what i believe is installing aftermarket speakers to replace my old speakers in the back panels. i finished and was proud of myself, just to turn on the radio and to hear the just as crappy sound as before. wtf! im guessing its a problem with the headunit? because i still have the original radio headunit in. did i do something wrong? any information you need to diagnose my problem just let me know.

My guess its the radio. After all it is almost 20 years old.

Are you sure your new speakers are hooked up in-phase?

i do believe its the radio. im also almost positive that its hooked up in-phase, but the old speakers weren't marked at all, but if out of the red and yellow wire, red is positive, then yes, their hooked up in-phase.

Most factory unamped speakers are paper coned for better sound at lower amperage (read: < 14.4), just changing the speakers will not produce a better sound unless the original speakers are torn/damaged or with damaged coils. I assume that you upgraded, but without more info, it would be difficult to see what you need to do.

As I see it, you "should" buy a small 200 watt amp (roughly)that is 4 channel. A new head unit technically would have more output, but the signal would degrade quickly, and as the volume goes up the speakers would sound terrible. The wattage of the 200 watt amp is more than your speakers can handle, so you would need to be conservative with the gain. I typically recommend more amp than speakers so as not to load the amp too much. Also, with an active passover style amp, you could "target" your speakers frequencies better. Using a head unit only is not for "those" styles of speakers.

Dont go by the colour of the wires. Do the AA battery test. Hook up two wires to the old speaker then put the other end of each wire on the ends of the battery. If the cone moves OUT, then it is hooked up correctly. (positive to positive and negative to negative). If the cone moves IN, it is hooked up incorrectly (Positive to negative, negative to positive). Then determine which wire is positive and which wire is negative.
