lsd locker open posi. whats your poison.
long story short. when i got my truck the prev owner did all the driveline services. diffes xfer trans chasis lube. he cared for the truck. i added a bottle of lsd additave (lite chattering on turns) and it has been great. awsome traction doesn't go sideways all the time. love it. now as for reliability.
well i checked it the other day (had been through some flooding and wanted to make sure there was no water in it. well much to my surprise i found metel in the fluid. nice silver stinky gear oil.
well my clips aren't broke and it's still functional but im pretty sure im gonne lose it soon. my options are fix it (bout 300 my cost from my parts department). i can put in a locker provided i can find one in my cost range. i can get a powertrax unit for it.
or my fave option. get a front housing with 3.92's (got 3.21's now
) and do a swap on my ring and pinion.
im wandering what you all have and how it's worked for you. keep in mind this is my daily driver so things like spools and welded spiders are out of the question. im figuring a locker is most likely not gonna be my choice (not a rock crawler although im looking foward to a trail im not out to wreck my truck.)
thanks guys.

Choose according to how you drive. An lsd is great for street traction with mild trails. Open for street and no trails, or rather just dirt roads. Locker for purpose built off roading. My guess is that you need a slip type unit.
If you have a LSD you can't drop in a Powertrax without getting a open carrier to replace the LSD carrier. Junkyard $30 or so.
I have a Powertrax No-Slip. I love it!! Very easy to install and the traction is unmatched. The only thing is turning on a dead stop you have to use very light throttle to keep from spinning the tires. To me LSD are junk. You can get the Powertrax at www.ringpinion.com
If you want to keep it simple and buy replacement clutches for the LSD and rebuild it that would be okay. Try your local dealer or www.ebay.com for clutches.
The gear change will be good. 3.9 is not to low that you will still get good Hwy MPG. And you will feel the power difference. Especially if you have larger than stock tires. For gears go to www.ringpinion.com

im thinking a detroit locker is to much aswell. i can't/ won't go open because of the hills and slick spots around here. no air lockers or anything either. the needs don't justify it. if the **** clutches in the lsd lasted longer i'd be happy with that. thing is i used the truck alott in the yard (pulling down trees adding to the house things of that nature) so i have to have good traction witch i have now with my lsd. and i may well stay with lsd for the simple fact that for what i do it works pretty well. i like what i've seen of the powertrax no slip and think it would work out nicely to if i go that route.
as for the ratio the stock tires are like 27.5 inches tall. im running 31's. nothing crazy.
i do enough town driving that i figure it's gotta help out. and right now i can 70mph and just turn around 2 grand so im sure i have room for it. i want it mainly for the times i have 4 thousand lb's behind it or a thousand in it. thanks by the way guys. ill see what my damage is tomarow and im headed to pullapart this weekend i think. they have several dakotas and durango so im sure ill find what i want there.
