newer electronics for the old dog.
Hi all; I really need some advise. I have a 92, 5.2, with auto trans and want to pick up the pace a little. What I have in mind is to drop in a 5.9 with after market aluminum heads, mild cam, still street friendly with 87 octane because it's a daily driver. I'm afraid if I spend the bucks to build this and drop it in, my current ECM won't do the job. I do not want to go with a carb. I want SFI, which I'm aware I do not have now, so I'm considering the possibilities of going to OBD2 that can be reflashed to my needs, so I've heard???
What is my best, (and least expensive), option:
1: Buy a complete full size Ram donor truck and pull the entire harness, engine, transmission, (or will my current tranny do), and try to adapt it to my Dakota? I don't know if the fuel pumps are comparable, I'm running no cat., so two 02 sensors are required? The speedometer on OBD2 are electronic so will a speed sensor running off the cable be ok?
2: How about using my existing harness and finding a pin out diagram for each controller and then overlay or eliminate any wiring that is required? Will a reflash get rid of the need for a #2 O2 senor?
3: This is impossible and I should just rebuild my 200k+ mile 5.2 engine with the aluminum heads and an RS cam and be satisfied? I'm even considering a 5.9 stroke crank, (which would make it a 344ci), but fear that will throw off the electronic timing.?
JUST DON'T HAVE THE EXTRA $$$BUCKS$$$ TO THROW AWAY!!!
Any experienced advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If all your doing is "5.9 with after market aluminum heads, mild cam, still street friendly with 87 octane" Then you don't need a custom tune. And all your stock electronics will work. Only thing is get the 5.9 injectors.
The Mopar Performance Computer for a Ram 94-95 5.9 will be enough. That is what I have to run my 5.9 mild upgrades.
The stock transmission Can handle that power, as long as it is running good now.
If you go into a stroker kit or supercharger or something with LARGE power increase you may want to look into tuning and a stronger internal parts for the transmission. Or a race transmission from http://www.phoenixtrans.com
You can get custom flashing on our OBD1 computer at http://www.bgperformancepcm.com/#magnum But like I said mild build like you mentioned doesn't need it and Mopar High performance Computer is more than enough. You can get it from www.summitracing.com
