Default Transfer Case Question

I have a 95 dodge dakota 4X4 automatic with a 3.9 l with a bad transmission. I have found someone willing to sell me a transmission but he had a truck had reverse go out put in a different transmission and two weeks later reverse went out again and got another transmission and put it in. Now the reverse has gone out again. His mechanic says all along it is the transfer case that is bad and not the transmission. So he is willing to sell me the one that they took out. My question is it possible that the transfer case could effect only reverse, also would it effect the transmission? I am not a mechanic or act to be one so I do not understand how this could work. Any help or information would help.

Thanks,

Clint

A transfer case will not effect only reverse. The transfer case is attached to the transmission at the output shaft only, so it has no interaction with each individual gear of the transmission.

sounds like you could have restricted cooler maybe. i wouldn't think that many reverse bands were bad and failed alike.
