Default 5.9 heads on a 5.2 engine

Hello i have a 1991 dodge dakota currently it is 5.2 liter V8 that is throttle body fuel injected this is the pre-magnum engine not the actual magnum and i was wondering if it is at all possible to throw 5.9 magnum heads on a 5.2 pre-magnum engine if it is not or it is going to take alot of moding things to make it work then are there any pre-magnum 5.9 heads that would bolt right up or would it just be easyer to swap out my engine with a magnum engine and build it up anyways thanks for any sujestions

You would be better off swapping to a magnum long block, but the LA has more potential in the HP department. The Premag heads are drilled perpendicular to the block, whereas the Magnum's are skewed at 45 degree's. You can drill the heads to match, but it is inconvenient. You will also pick up alot of compression doing this, since the Magnums are closed chambered style. I am no expert on the differences year to year, but if your heads are broken, then the replacements would be cheaper than the updating. There are alot of LA performance heads on the market as well used and new.

I was told a long time ago it was a good idea to run magnum heads on my 72 318 for performance. Cheap and well worth the gain in performance (good bang for the buck ratio).

Yes 5.9 magnum heads can go on a 5.2 magnum engine. And vise versa.

Yes the 5.9 magnum heads can go on a 318 LA engine. But the stock TBI intake will not fit the magnum heads. There are carb intakes for the magnum but I doubt your TBI will fit. Even if you do get it all to work the gains is going to be minimal. Your best bet is to build a LA 360 which will drop right into your stock mounts.
