Default Access panel (in the truck bed)??

I now truly own a Dakota...my fuel gauge has went nuts and reads all crazy. So, I have read the many posts and combed the internet and have pretty much seen and read all there is. One thing I am curious to know is that, given this common issue among the gage and pump, has anyone thought of placing an access panel over the gas tank thus allowing quick and easy service of these systems? I'm not just talking of a roughly cut hole with jagged edges. I'm thinking more on the lines of like a flange under neath riveted in place with enough material showing to use like a nutplate and reattach the cut out peice after maintenance is performed.

It would be nice, but the bed side would be in the way. Removing the bed is very easy 30mins and your done.
