Same here rod not cable, had to add two inches to it when I lifted it.
Back to the problem- If it was me I'd check the adjustment rod/cable whatever. Im guessing something may be bent or the adjustment nut slipped. That dash indicator is a pointer on a string that attaches to the collom has no bearing on what gear you are in ignore it, go by rpm or feel. My two cents. Good luck with it.
