How do you know the front wont spin? Are you trying to do a burn out to see which spins? Correct the 96 wont have a CAD Central Axle Disconnect. So everything is solidly connected, unless driveshaft or other parts are missing. Have you look underneath to check?

if it's all there then jack it all up all wheels in the air get under and with it in 4wd (not running) grab the front shaft and see if it spins the wheels or if it's locked the rear kinda get an idea where your loseing your link.

btw +1 on making sure it's all there. people like to take out parts rather than fix them sometimes. 'shakes head'

www.ringpinion.com has a list of years and vehicles that has the same axle. You can buy new spiders from there too. Are you sure the ring and pinion is good. One chip and you need to get a new one, since there is a weak spot now.
