I put on a stage 2 jet performance chip on my V-6, and love it. I noticed horsepower and low end torque gain. Also gained 2 mpg. It costs $330 though. Might be able to find used for cheaper. It makes such a difference in my truck it's not even funny. I've heard some bad things on here about 'em, but I've never had a problem, just increased power!!!!

ive heard people say that the JET chips can mess up the computer, but i have no experience with them so it could easily work, so if you wanna go that route then go for it, its worth a shot lol.

I've been thinking about a chip, but was never really sure about it. It seems if you get the right one, it eventually pays itself off. One chip I saw (I may be able to find it again) claimed to be able to boost my mileage by 4-9 MPG. I don't know how believable that is, however..

Found it! http://www.streetbeatcustoms.com/Sur...ce-Chip/17558/

Anybody know anything about it?

Sure sounds like junk to me. Ebay sells Flame Stickers that will give you 50 extra HP and 50 MPG!!! They all are scams.

Lol, yeah, 9 mpg gain sounds a little far fetched. That would mean we could be pulling 30 mpg with our trucks haha. I jump for joy when I pull 20 mpg, & I've only done that once & I was probably going down hill in neutral

I pull 20-22 MPG steadily in my '88
I get a little over 360 miles on a 15 gallon tank (17 gallons for space for fumes).

Nice! I also have over-sized tires, spend a lot of time off road, and I drive it like I stole it! lol! If I drove it half way normal, I'd do better, but i still pull 17 steady. I'm also pushing 180k miles on the engine. I have a 84 Honda civic that gets 50+ mpg for when the pocket book gets light.

If there is a computer chip that increases your engine efficiency by 20%, do you not think that the factory would be installing it as a sales tactic to attract customers? I know that the "chips" advance the timing of the engine and there is a benefit in certain ranges, but I think that chips' gains is referring to the smallest 1.2l engine on the market and applying that info to all engines.
In addition, altering the timing is not the most beneficial route to increasing the torque of a stock engine. The exhaust, dollar for dollar, is the best route for meaningful gains. Followed by the intake tract, then the camshaft timing (arguably the ignition strength).
My followup question:
Since your using your engine as a guinea pig for class..... what exactly are you trying to accomplish as far as gains? At what RPM? Compression? Fuel type? Octane rating?

These are simple questions on the surface, but without really looking at what the intent is, you cannot proceed realistically. I recommended the positive displacement based on what you mentioned as you primary goal. I could go so far as to recommend about 20 grand in custom alloy pistons and coated skirts for your block, but if your "learning" about engines, I would think your best and hardest lesson would be to blueprint the engine, before you start modifying it. After you begin to learn the factory specs and matching your components within a very strict tolereace, then you could start learning where the meaningful gains can be found and what changes when you modify a parameter. I promise you that it is harder to blueprint an engine than to modify it.

180k miles, huh? My total miles are showing 250k and that's a new cover that was installed when the guy-I-bought-it-from's grandmother owned it. So I believe I'm pushing 300k, if not over. And I know enough to know (by looking at wear and tear, and how much I had to do to this engine to get it running like it is) it hasn't been rebuilt. Not even once. And 50 MPG? O_O That's eye-popping.
