Default 89 3.9L timing

Hi Guys...

Trying to figure out how to adjust the timing on an '89 with the 3.9 Liter. I still have serious backfiring issues even after having replaced the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs... I didn't mess with anything else on purpose, and how it got that way I'm not sure.

There are a few screws I've seen on the outside bottom of the dist. assembly, next to the clips, are those what need to be loosened so I can rotate the cap? I'm still new to these engines, I have no idea, and I can't find a procedure online or in any manual I've seen.

Any help would be, er, uh... helpful.

Thanks.... M

look at the harmonic balancer there's a line on it with smaller lines and #'s disconect the coolant temp sensor and set your timing at 10dg's btds. At the base of the dist.there's a 9/16 bolt loosen it a couple turns this will allow the dist. to turn be carefull it doesnt take much.
