Default Starter moter help - help!

3.9l 4wd auto

Oh did I blow this one...

The truck has had a starting problem for about half a year - sometimes starts, sometimes just a loud "CLICK". Finally, just the click. After trying all the connection wiggling tricks that got me out of it before, I thought it time to examine the starter. I looked up what I could at Autozone, but found nothing all that descriptive, so I just shot for the first two bolts I saw. That was not good. I ended up backing the starter motor alone from the entire motor/solenoid assembly, and it won't go back together in place.

I think I need now to remove the entire assembly (like I was trying to in the first place), but I find only one large bolt atop of the assembly, that seems like it would be one of what I presume two blots (and it is a bear to try to loosen). Anyone have any pictures or suggestions, as I can't see what the heck I am doing, which is making this that much more fun. All help is desperately appreciated!!!

The service manual has a starter rebuild section. But I wold suggest just to take to to get rebuild professionally or get a new or remanufactured unit from any autoparts stores. The Click most likely is the solenoid going bad. You should have replaced it the first time it happened. It was giving you a warning.

I finally got visibility - I removed the danged exhaust manifold. Oh - I am sorry if I mis-wrote earlier - I don't want to rebuild. I am going to get a new one and replace. I just need to know where the heck the other bolt holding it all in is located!!!

Earlier when I would work with the wires near the top of the starter it seemed the problem would end for a while - as did most recently. I had hoped and thought it was a simple corrosion problem on the terminals for that reason. Well, I guess it is best doing this now instead the middle of Winter.

Found it. I guess it wouldn't do any good to vent again about the difficulty on working on this truck. Are all small trucks like this? That bottom nut took Houdini contortions to get at and out, and getting that rig out would have been impossible without removing the exhaust manifold or steering column in the compartment. Working on a 1994 Chevy 3500 was so much easier! To replace that starter, I crawled under it in the super market parking lot it failed at, dropped the old out and slapped the new in. This puppy is a whole new ball-game...
