Default How to ID Tranny and Rear end

Hey guys. My friend just recently bought a 93 Dakota Extended cab with the 6ft bed with a 318 Auto 2wd. And i was trying to ID the tranny and rear end and gear ratio on it. Is there any easy way to tell that im missing or does it say it anywhere by chance? Im more familiar with older mopar components and not so much of the newer lol. But any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Very simple the V8's came with the 46rh transmission and Chry 8.25 rear end (Oval cover)

As for the ratio probably 3.55 the 3.21 or the 3.9 were rare. There is a sticker under the hood that states the ratio. Or you can request a build sheet from Dodge, see the FAQ for a link. Or you can lift the rear end and count the number of times it takes the driveshaft to turn 2 revolutions of the tire, with the other tire held still.

Yeah i looked at the tag and it was 3.55s and the taf said it had a A-518 tranny but the 518 and 46rh are *******ly the same correct? And another question also is its slips from 1-2 sometimes but not too bad and it will slip a little bit if your going up a hill. Is there anything that could help prevent this without rebuild the tranny? Were going to drop the pan and change the fluid and filter this weekend because im pretty sure its over due for that... Any helps greatly appreciated guys!! Thanks!

Also the guy he bought it from said when its super cold out it takes a little bit before it will engage into drive but it will go into reverse quicker. And if you think it is shot is there any tranny out of a ram with a 318 that would be stronger that would bolt up and work with it? Thanks.

Yes a 46rh is the same as an A518 just with electronic OD and TCC.

Try the fluid change, get an air compressor and blow out the fluid in the lines to clean as much as you can. You can try adjusting the bands. The service manual in the FAQ describes how to do it.

It is in the service manual, which is in the FAQ.
