Can my truck tow horses?
From Experience here is my 2 cents worth. I towed v=6 4x4 89 Dak with the 4x4 94 V-8 automatic. I was moving states and had both trucks loaded with stuff including a 345 Lb. Bike. You need the oil cooler for hills and you definately need the heavier frame hitch, bumper is just a toy. I agree the trailer needs good brakes. The truck will talk to you and you will learn that 55 is about the speed you want to run. Forget Overdrive unless you are on totally flat and level. Gas mileage will be cut in half. I highway average a little over 20 MPG with the 94 not towing. Towing I average 8 to 13 depending on road conditions. The biggest thing you have to do is gas pedal it like a larger truck. This means if you stand on the gas pedal with the load you will over fuel and can actually burn a valve with heavy load and too much fuel. the truck will respond but it is very hard on the engine and tranny. Give it a reasonable amount of gas, let the engine RPM climb slowly and use the tranny shifts, automatic or manual to get up to speed. Even with electric brakes increase your braking distance just for safety. All will be good if you do what all the other guys have suggested. I also max my helper springs when towing heavy and I also de-torque the front endto keep truck level. Another thing you will experience is lighter steering but you should be fine. Final thought is if you are towing a distance take 5 gallons of gas along until you learn the fuel guage response to the increased weight. LOL but then again who trusts a Dakota fuel guage? RoFL
