Help with 88 dakota engine check light

first thing to do is check your tranny fluid level.
next adjust the ICS (idle control solenoid). with the truck warm and running disconnect the plug from the ics (it's located on the right hand side of the throttlebody if your standing in front of the grill). adjust the small bolt (5/16) out until you reach close to 2250 rpm. then shut off and put the plug back in
then adjust the shift rod. it's the solid rod that goes from the throttlebody to the tranny. loosen the bolt on the tranny end and push the lever that goes in to the transmission towards the front of the truck but with just enough force to move it or you will strip it, it will hit a stop. then tighten the bolt.
give it a try, if it is still the same it could be a bad ICS. my 89 started going bad and i had the same problems.
with a bad ICS it affects the idle speed, which affects the position of the lever on the throttlebody. the lever is attached to the tranny by a rod and that affects the tranny shift points.

You got a speed sensor code with this???
