Unhappy '90 Dodge Dakota Sport. Help please :)

This is my first post. I just joined the community it has helped me out a lot so far so i figured i'd join.

1990 Dodge Dakota Sport 4WD V6 3.9L 5 speed manual tranny

I have two questions. When i look under the hood i noticed that one of the pulleys doesn't have a belt on it. I'm wondering what that pulley is for i believe it is the power steering pump but i can turn my wheels extremely easily when parked so im confused. It's the pulley on the top right of all the other pulleys when your facing the cab of the truck standing at the front bumper.

Second is the clutch hydraulic or cable? Also whatever it is how would i adjust it properly it seems to not engage until the pedal is almost fully disengaged.

Alright three questions actually lol i just had the tranny fluid changed because its hard to shift into second gear when the truck isnt warmed up. Well they put in pennzoil GL-5 is that okay?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to DF, I will move this to the 1st Generation Dakota Sub-forum.

As for the missing belt take some pictures of it.

As for clutch it should be hydraulic, but I'm unfamiliar with the early years. Look for a clutch master cylinder under the hood. It may need the lines replaced since it is a non serviceable unit. Also the clutch or pressure plate may be bad since it holding.

Check the FAQ in that section for proper fluid type.

It was hydraulic and i checked the reservoir and it was full so i think its fine. The clutch was just replaced before i bought it.

Hopefully you can tell me what that pulley is for hopefully just the A/C or something that i dont have to connect back up immediately

Thanks in advance

It's an air pump, theoretically helps emissions.

If you don't have emissions testing in your area don't worry about hooking it back up.

Default Thank you!

Thanks, maybe on you guys also have an idea on why it idles around 1500-2000 RPM seems to do it 100% of the time when its warmed up and about 50% of the time when it hasn't warmed up yet

well nobody responded to my last question so searched the internet and decided to try and change the TPS and it still idles high. The little prong that goes into the tps was dirty i rubbed it off sort of well maybe i should have cleaned it good. Anyone know something else that might cause a high idle?

Your IAC may be dirty or bad. I think out 90 models have them.

Default Iac

I took off the IAC last night well online it said its the Idle Speed Control Motor.. I think its the same thing. Well i took it apart and it was full of grime and crap so i cleaned it out really good with q-tips and alcohol then put some of that orange lube crap on the gears again (i could tell it had it before) but the gears are very wore down almost to the point i dont think they would rotate simultaneously. but i put it all together anyways and slapped it back on seems ALOT better but still idles too high sometimes but slowly drops back down. Must need a new one 173$

I am thinking that the manual trans in these Dakotas want ATF in them. I know or think I know that the trans behind the V6 is different from my nv3500, but my nv3500 calls for ATF because the clearances are so tight gear lube wouldnt properly lubricate. Id check and make sure what lube your trans calls for an adjust accordingly.

Talking ...

Sweet so i got a new IAC today and that fixed it right up auto adjusted and is idling perfect now around 500-600 RPM. As for the Tranny it seems to be doing better now that im not shifting when its at 2200 RPM I dont know if that makes a difference but seems like it.

Now my question is if these dakotas have coil springs? My front passenger side shock absorber is completely shot and i noticed there arent any coil springs on either side... Also looks like there isnt a spot for them to sit but autozone sells them for my truck.. soo im confused thanks for all the help guys!
