Default engine swap, OBDI to OBD II question

So I have a 93 Dak 4x4 with the V6 and 5 spd. Have hopes of swapping in a V8, is it possible to use a 96 or newer motor and running OBD II? If I get the engine, engine harness, and computer it should work correct? Will I have any other issues? Thanks for the help, I doubt the V6 will dies anytime soon even with 220K on it but I am looking for options.

Yes it is possible to swap over to OBDII but you will run into tons of problems and headaches. It is best to get an V8 PCM from 93-95 and add in 2 injector wires. The engine long block can be 92-03? 5.2 93-03 for 5.9. Most of the electronics will need to be the 93-95 to match the plugs on the wiring harness.

I won't have to add injector wires as I said I am getting a full engine harness. If I have the v8 harness and computer what else could be an issue?

OBDII ties into the dash so you will need the complete dash wiring harness as well as it controls the transmission so you will need the transmission or else you will get 100 transmission codes and it will go into limp mode. You will need to swap on both O2 sensors and any other emission systems. Depending on what year the donor vehicle you may need the security system shut down some are tied in to the PCM. And if you wanting to go to OBDII for more tuning options, there is actually less options for 96-99 if I remember correctly then the 93-95 OBDI.

Add in 2 extra injectors wiring or almost the ENTIRE trucks worth of wiring and systems. You take your pick.

Ok that's what I was looking for. Thank you for taking the time to help. Looks like I will plan OBD I to keep it simple, can a manual transmission go into limp mode?

I don't know for sure but it is possible for the OBDII manual transmission PCM to go into limp mode. After all it is still tied into it for the shift light, and if the PCM doesn't see the transmission it may set off a code. I don't know if there is a code, you can check the code lists and the wiring diagrams in the FAQ.
