Default Distributor help

I have to replace the distributor on my 92 Dakota. It's a 3.9 magnum engine.
I already ordered the part, but I was wondering how exactly to replace it. Or if it's a pretty intricate job, should I just bring it to my local mechanic and have him deal with it?
Any thoughts would be great. Thanks guys

Same truck as mine and I also changed mine.Very simple.Very tight fit with the wires on the cap so what I did was remove them all before I took the cap off.Just make sure to check where the button is pointing when you pull the cap.Remove the hold down bolt behind the distributor then pull it out.May take a bit of struggle but will come out. Put the button on the new distributor before you set it in this will help you align it.Just be very careful with the cam sensor as it's plastic. If your uneasy with that you can always get a buddy to help you reset timing. Then just drop the new distributor with the button on to #1 and put everything back together..

Ok, so where's the cam sensor. I'll want to be careful around it, as you said. And I have to reset the engine timing with the replacement of the new distributor?

Cam sensor is under the cap and has a wire connected to it.After you take the cap off you can move the sensor outta the way.Easiest way will be to pull the distributor and have a buddy help ya reset timing. Then replace new distributor with the button on so its pointing to #1 when you set it in.

You guys are half correct, half confusing. Yes it is easy to do. The best way to do it is get the engine to TDC on the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap, the rotor should be pointing to the #1 cylinder position. Then remove the distributor then install the new one. Now in the same position with the rotor on #1 spot. Do not move the motor until the distributor is on correctly in the correct spot.

This picture will help which is in the FAQ.

Thanks Crazy. That makes it much easier to understand when there's a diagram to follow.
